Hewlett-Packard Co. and Google Inc. have pulled off the latest Chromebook 11 from the shelves after some users complained about an overheating problem with the charger during use.
The HP Chromebook 11 is no longer available for purchase at Best Buy stores, nor on Amazon, HP and Google's online stores. The Chrome OS laptop has attracted some complaints from its consumers about the charger getting overheated during use. Google and HP issued a joint statement Wednesday following the reported problems. In fact, according to sources at Best Buy, store managers were sent urgent instructions to remove the HP Chromebook 11 effective immediately.
"Google and HP are pausing sales of the HP Chromebook 11 after receiving a small number of user reports that some chargers included with the device have been damaged due to overheating during use," Google said in a blog post. "We are working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to identify the appropriate corrective action, and will provide additional information and instructions as soon as we can."
Until the companies have arrived at a solution, HP Chromebook 11 users have been advised to refrain from using the charger that comes with the laptop. However, customers can continue using their laptops with other Underwriters Laboratories-listed micro-USB chargers, which usually come with Android smartphones and tablets.
At this moment, it is also unclear how the companies will replace the faulty chargers. They can either be shipped to Chromebook owners using the information in company's database or owners will be asked to visit the outlet from where the laptop was purchased to get a new one at no cost.
Neither HP nor Google have announced the length of the period of investigation, and failed to provide any details on when the sales of the Chromebook 11 will be resumed. So users must sit tight until further announcements are made.
