For close to a decade, Calvin Johnson has been one of the most feared wide outs in pro football. Let's be real, you don't earn a nickname like "Megatron" just because you like the movie "Transformers." But the Lions' leader's future is currently up in the air.
Despite reports that the 30-year old receiver may retire - the possibility of which was left open with Johnson's statement following the season - his agent claims his client hasn't made a decision yet.
Johnson's agent, Bus Cook, said there's no timetable for Johnson to decide on his plans, according to a report from Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, via Pro Football Talk. Cook knows a thing or two about a wavering retirement decision - he was the agent for Brett Favre (via Birkett), who contemplated retirement multiple times before finally calling it quits in 2010.
On Jan. 6th, Johnson released a statement, via NFL.com's Kevin Patra, saying, "Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future. I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future."
A former teammate of Johnson's opines that Calvin may be finished though. The teammate, who spoke to Dave Birkett, and chose to remain anonymous, said, "There has been some conversations about it, not asking me how it is. But I think the guy's beat up. I think he's been through enough. And I think it's just his time. He's made the money, got the records, but whatever. I don't know for sure if he's going to do it. I don't know if he's going to get that itch to keep going. I really don't know."
Johnson, the second overall pick by the Lions in the 2007 draft out of Georgia Tech, has largely carried the franchise since his rookie year. He's a five-time Pro Bowler, who is sixth among active players in receiving yards (11,619) and third among actives in receiving touchdowns (83), according to Pro-Football-Reference.
