The San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers continue to be active on the trade market this offseason.
The two MLB clubs struck a deal today with the Padres sending prospect outfielder Rymer Liriano to the Brewers in exchange for prospect pitcher Trevor Seidenberger on Thursday. Both teams confirmed the news on Twitter.
FOX Sports' Jon Morosi first reported a deal between the two sides was close.
Liriano, 24, was signed as an international free agent back in 2007. He began his career as a 17-year-old and finally made his MLB debut in 2015. The outfielder spent seven seasons in the Padres farm system and hit .277/.350/.435 with 445 runs scored, 68 home runs, 378 RBI and 198 stolen bases in 738 games.
In 38 games (109 at-bats) with the Padres last year, the former Baseball America top 100 prospect batted .220/.289/.266 with 13 runs scored, 1 home run, 6 RBI and 4 stolen bases. He was designated for assignment on Jan. 22.
It's unknown where he'll fit on the Brewers MLB roster if/when the time comes, but Khris Davis and Ryan Braun have been mentioned in trade rumors, so perhaps Milwaukee has other plans in mind to make room for Liriano.
In a corresponding move, the Brewers have designated outfielder Shane Peterson for assignment.
On the other hand, San Diego will add to their minor-league pitching depth with Seidenberger. The left-hander was drafted in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB Draft and has pitched in 71 games between the Brewers' rookie league, Class A Wisconsin, High Class A Brevard County and Double-A Biloxi.
The 23-year-old reliever is 11-5 with a 4.38 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 122 strikeouts in 129-1/3 innings.
