The Kansas City Chiefs announced Friday that tight end Travis Kelce has signed a contract extension to remain with the team. The Chiefs tight end has reportedly signed a 5-year contract extension worth $46 million, and includes $20.5 million in guarantees.
"Today we reached and agreement with Travis and his representatives on a contract extension," said Chiefs general manager John Dorsey, via the Chiefs' team website. "He's a talented football player that has become an important piece to what we do offensively. Travis is a high-character guy and a leader in our locker room."
Kelce was considered one of the Chiefs' key free agents that the team was focused on resigning, and safety Eric Berry and linebacker Derrick Johnson still remain on that list, according to ESPN's Field Yates. The Chiefs tight end has been a consistent threat in the passing game and has recorded over 800 yards receiving in two consecutive seasons.
Kelce recorded 72 receptions for 875 yards and scored five touchdowns during the regular season, and he has been a reliable outlet for quarterback Alex Smith. The Chiefs tight end was a huge factor in Kansas City winning their first playoff game in 22 seasons and led the team with 128 receiving yards against the Texans on wild card weekend.
Kelce was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and he has quickly developed into a top-tier tight end in the league.
