MapQuest is trying to regain lost ground in the market for its navigational service. The mobile app for Android and iOS has got a facelift with new and impressive voice-guided navigation, map layers, high-resolution images and a lot more.
MapQuest is rebounding and claims to be "bigger, better, savvier and more responsive than ever." The web mapping company announced Wednesday that it has upgraded its mobile navigation app with impressive features. With such a facelift, MapQuest on Android and iOS goes in direct competition with the likes of Google Maps, Apple Maps.
MapQuest is a free online web mapping service, widely known for its use in desktops since the early 1990s. The service may not have secured a strong ground in its mobile invasion but evidently scored big on the desktop platform. But the company has done everything to make its presence felt in the smartphone app industry.
"Launching today, our new MapQuest mobile app offers a personalized navigation experience that's both easy-to-use and safe for everyday drivers," Laura Maxwell, Marketing Manager at MapQuest, wrote in a company's blog post. "We're so proud to present an app that better connects drivers to routes that shape their everyday lives."
The new app has been redesigned and built from the scratch, according to the app developers, which is a result of nine months of effort. The latest feature in the MapQuest mobile app includes a clean, user-friendly interface, with new map layers and customizable category buttons. The right-hand side panel gives users the option of traffic data, satellite imagery, hotels, food, gas, and others. On the left hand side panel, customizable locations saved on the map are displayed, like "Go Home" or "Go to work."
The app smartly understands your route and saves time by offering the best route options. The app automatically updates for traffic information and suggests suitable ways to avoid getting stuck in a jam. Reroute pop ups appear on the screen to alert drivers if they are heading toward traffic that may take long. The app displays estimated time frame to reach the destination with every route that it offers. Voice guided turn-by-turn navigation leads to lesser distraction from the road. Finally, you can share your location on social networking sites like Facebook or email and SMS.
MapQuest is available for download for free on Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
