"Contrast" for the PlayStation 4 has officially been released, but game critics share mixed reviews about the game.
The next-gen game follows a girl and her imaginary friend to solve puzzles, mixing both 2D and 3D platforming to create a visually interesting world. However, many critics weren't too pleased with the game because it didn't "take advantage" of its possibilities and feels unfinished.
Check out what game critics had to say below.
The Good: IGN rates that game at a 7.5 out of 10
"Contrast is a game full of heart, beauty, and at least a few excellent puzzles. It's at its best when it marries its poignant story to its platforming, and at its weakest when it's about moving boxes, but it rarely goes very long without showing us something worth playing."
The Bad: Joystiq gives "Contrast" a 3 out of 5 stars
"The adventure's warm outcome remains worth pursuing despite these issues, which seem exacerbated in a game that doesn't bother with too much filler. There is a certain purity to admire in Contrast, spotted throughout its dream-like world and theatrically contrived platforming, but it's just a little too concise and a little too thin, like a fleeting shadow."
The WORSE: Polygon rates the game at a 4.5 out of 10
"Contrast fails because the climbing - Dawn's main means of traversal - feels so lousy and purposeless. The reward is always another glowing orb or another box to help solve puzzles. This isn't nearly reward enough for putting up with the platforming itself. For an acrobat, Dawn is stiff, flimsy and unreliable. My best efforts and plenty of patience weren't enough to stop her from hopping into the game's many uncontextualized bottomless pits.
"The biggest puzzle is Contrast itself - and Compulsion seems content to leave it unsolved. The shadow world, the "real" world, the half-built floating structures, the invisible friend, the themes of magic and science - all go unexplained. That vagueness could be charming if Contrast wasn't so obviously unfinished."
