OP Productions, the zombie survival game publishers, issued a statement that said War Z will be temporarily offline following a hack into their servers that compromised several users' information.
War Z game publishers are intensely investigating the source of intrusion that compromised gamers' user information used to log in to the game and its forums. OP Productions have taken the game offline until the matter has been resolved. The email addresses and passwords used to log in to the game, character names used in the game and the forum along with the information on the forums including the IP addresses of the forum users have been swiped by the hackers.
OP Productions has assured that no financial information or payment details have been compromised as it is managed by a third party organization outside its system. The company has urged all gamers to change the passwords used to log in to the game with a more secure encryption. They noted that not all passwords are strong enough, hence suggested that users change them to something which may include a "combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. Longer passwords are stronger. We suggest not to use password shorter than 8 symbols, with 12 to 15 symbols long password being preferred."
OP Productions also advised to change the password for other services if the linked email address is used elsewhere.
"We are issuing this Security Alert to all Survivors as a precaution so you can take some precautionary measures on your own," OP said. "We have already taken a number of steps to increase security and are continuing to work with external advisors and investigators to identify and implement measures to minimize the chance of this happening in the future."
The game publisher said that to achieve better resolution to the matter, they have involved third party experts and investigators and will provide timely updates on any progress the company makes during the investigation.
"This has been a humbling experience for us. While we all know that there is no guaranty of security on the internet, our goal is to try our very best to protect your data. We sincerely apologize."
