It turns out E.L. James and "Team 50" are listening to their "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans and are trying to figure out a way to keep the steamy, kinky sex scenes without having to drastically change them from the book's description. Early on when it was announced that Universal Pictures and Focus Features were going to make a film adaption of the popular novel, fans were concerned that the sex scenes would get watered-down.
In a recent interview with Collider, Dana Brunetti revealed that the theatrical release of the movie (due out February 13, 2015) would be rated R but teased that a NC-17 version might be released a couple weeks later.
"It'll be R, obviously it has to be R. this is just my opinion and this doesn't mean this is going to happen, but I always thought it would be really cool if we released the R version and then we had an NC-17 version that we released a few weeks later," he said. "So everybody could go and enjoy the R version, and then if they really wanted to see it again and get a little bit more gritty with then have that NC-17 version out there as well."
It was previously reported that Universal and Focus were hesitant about making the movie NC-17 because they felt like it would exclude certain people. The NC-17 version of the movie will feature all the explicit, hot-and-heavy sex scenes that fans liked in the book. Not much would be edited out from this version of the movie and will definitely have some moviegoers blushing.
"It'd be great for the studio too because they'd get a double dip on the box office... What we're kind of hearing from fans is they want it dirty, they want it as close as possible [to the book]. We want to keep it elevated but also give the fans what they want."
Brunetti stressed that releasing two versions was his idea and that doesn't mean the studios will jump on board. Regardless, he did say the movie would be tastefully shot.
Do you think a NC-17 version of "50 Shades of Grey" should be released?
