Zayn Malik released the steamy music video for his new solo single "Pillowtalk" last week, and the former One Direction singer casted his rumored girlfriend, Victoria Secret model Gigi Hadid, in the lead role. The pop star called into the Los Angeles-based radio show "Zach Sang and the Gang" on Tuesday and confirmed his relationship status with Hadid while also giving fans a hint at which one of his past loves inspired the sexy track.
"So basically I wrote that shortly after I left the band," Malik, 23, told Sang during his phone interview. "We wrote that song around the time I was feeling those emotions and that's why I feel like it came out the way it did. I feel in the vocal you can really get a sense of what I'm saying, and hopefully we got that across with the song."
Malik announced his split from the boy band One Direction on March 25, 2015, according to the statement posted to the band's official Facebook page. At the time, he was still engaged to his former fiancé Perrie Edwards of the British girl band Little Mix, according to People, and the couple would later call off their engagement in August.
He has since moved on, and after months of rumors, Malik finally confirmed his relationship with Hadid on record during his radio interview. The host asked about what it was like filming the sexy music video for "Pillowtalk" with his "girlfriend."
"Uh, yeah that was cool, something different. Yeah we enjoyed it, it was fun. A lot of fun on set," he responded, and the host repeated "girlfriend" one more time. "Exactly, I like what you've done there."
