The Dallas Cowboys went from first to worst in the NFC East during the 2015 season, and after losing quarterback Tony Romo twice with a broken collarbone, many think that the team should consider drafting a quarterback. Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion Troy Aikman is one who believes that the Cowboys should consider drafting a quarterback, and he thinks they should use their first round pick if a future franchise quarterback is on the board.
"If there is a player who.. is what you view as a franchise quarterback, I think you have to take that guy," Aikman said, via Pro Football Talk. "Jerry (Jones) is all in now and certainly he feels Tony Romo can play another three or four seasons, but I liken it a little to the Green Bay situation when the Packers took Aaron Rodgers. At the time, Brett Favre had never missed a game. And he would go on to never miss a game for three more years. In Dallas, we all know what happened with Romo going down last season and the backup situation, although I think their problems went beyond the quarterback position. To me, if you have a chance to add a franchise quarterback, and if you're going to the team that Jerry thinks they are going to be, then you're never going to be in this (draft) position again, at least not anytime soon."
ESPN's Todd McShay projected North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz as the Cowboys' first round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and many view him as the second best prospect at the position behind California quarterback Jared Goff. The Cowboys have only drafted four quarterbacks since Aikman, and Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is not sold on the idea that the team needs to use a first round pick on a quarterback.
The Cowboys finished the 2015 regular seasons as the 22nd ranked offense in the league in terms of yards per game, and while quarterback was not the only flaw on the field in Dallas this past season, it's clearly something that will need to be resolved. It will be interesting to follow the Cowboys leading up to the upcoming draft, as they have a major decisions to make as to whether they will draft an immediate impact player or possibly their future franchise quarterback.
