In a blog post Wednesday, Elisa Steele, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Skype Division, said Skype has surpassed 2 billion minutes of connections each day.
Microsoft may have foreseen the future of Skype when it shed $8.5 billion to purchase Skype in 2011. Skype has gained immense popularity for its voice over IP (VOIP) chat, instant messaging and video calling features. Skype has attracted over 100 million monthly active users since it was purchased by Microsoft, according to a report from Next Web, last November
"2 billion minutes is more than 33 million hours of people singing, laughing, joking and staying in touch," Steele wrote. "That means 1,388,000 days of togetherness, which make up more than 3,805 years of sharing or nearly 38 centuries of time spent on Skype in one day."
Two billion minutes spent on Skype everyday by all users is equivalent to flying around the world for more than 700,000 times or even traveling to Mars more than 5,400 times. It specifies how frequently users are connected to Skype which brings together loved ones at all times. The service operated by Microsoft offers free calls to Skype users to another Skype service, while managing to offer lowest charges on calling landlines or even mobile phones.
Skype was originally supported only through PC's and laptops, but as the obsession for smartphones began, Skype launched its first mobile app for iPhone in early 2011, which increased the number of online users. Skype currently operates on all platforms including Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 ,OS X, Linux, Android devices, Blackberry 10, iOS, Symbian and Windows Phone. Skype also developed a TV app, which allows users to download the app on their Smart TV and enjoy Skyping.
Skype promises to match the trending technology and offers its services on a broader range.
"We're constantly looking for even more ways for people to connect and share - from the living room to the board room, on the go, anytime, anywhere," Steele wrote.
Microsoft is in the midst of migrating its Windows Messenger users to Skype. Microsoft will complete the process by end of April, which will roughly increase Skype active users by 36 percent, according to a report from the Next Web.
