Maybelle and Anna, two rescue pigs who now enjoy a very happy life in the farm of Tracey and Jon Stewart (yes, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart), have not always been the happy pigs they are known to be on their official Facebook page. Just a few months ago, these two girls were fighting a losing battle for their lives.
The two pigs were found by animal activist Julia Robertson running along a highway in Georgia, possibly after escaping from a transport truck. Though Robertson wanted to rescue them right then and there, Maybelle and Anna were so traumatized that it took the activist two days to capture them, reported One Green Planet.
Both girls were discovered to have health issues once they were captured. Maybelle had a severe eye infection, while Anna was walking with a very notable limp. Nevertheless, the two eventually improved after a series of visits from a veterinarian.
Their journey, however, was just beginning.
Robertson reached out to PETA with the story of the two piglets, and soon, the two girls, now named Maybelle and Anna, caught the attention of two very prominent animal lovers, none other than Tracey and Jon Stewart themselves. Once the couple saw the two pigs, they immediately fell in love.
Thus, Maybelle and Anna, two rescue pigs who barely escaped from a life that would undoubtedly have ended in their slaughter, found their forever home.
The two pig sisters now spend their days in the Stewarts' farm sanctuary in New Jersey, where they can run around, play, and roll in the mud as much as they want. Of course, such a story as Maybelle and Anna's has garnered them a pretty massive fanbase. Currently, their day-to-day exploits are followed by more than 28,000 fans through their official Facebook page, The Daily Squeal.
