Kensington Palace, one of the residences of Prince William and Kate Middleton, became the scene of a rather curious death Tuesday morning. At about 3:00 a.m., police were called to the area after receiving reports of a man behaving suspiciously around the palace gardens. By the time the police arrived, however, the man was already aflame, according to BBC Breaking News.
Though the flames were quickly extinguished by authorities, the man was soon pronounced dead by paramedics at about 3:42 a.m., despite numerous efforts at resuscitation.
An investigation is currently underway in order to determine the identity of the man, as well as the reasons behind his suicidal actions. As of writing, authorities have only confirmed that the man was in his 40s and that the case was not being treated as an act of terrorism or protest, reports ITV News.
A clue might lie in a statement by a Scotland Yard spokesman, however, who stated that officers were called to a central London hospital a few hours before the incident. The hospital had reported that one of its patients seemed to have left the medical facility's premises.
The man had been admitted over concerns for his mental health, reports The Irish Mirror.
The grisly incident happened just hours after the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, delivered an impassioned speech about the state of mental health patients in the country.
