The CW has found its Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones. The "Riverdale" pilot, based on the Archie Comics, has cast Lili Reinhart and former Disney Channel star Cole Sprouse to fill two of the four lead roles, according to Deadline.
Greg Berlanti will produce the Archie Comics adaptation, which is set in present time. According to Deadline, "'Riverdale' is a subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small-town life - the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome façade.
Reinhart will play Betty, who is described as "sweet, studious, eager-to-please and wholesome." She also harbors a longtime crush on her best friend Archie. Her new friend Veronica will help give her advice as she turns against the expectations of being a perfect daughter, sister or student.
Sprouse will fill the role of Jughead Jones, the former best friend of Archie Andrews. He is a "heartthrob with a philosophical bent." "Riverdale" marks the television return of "The Suite Life" star.
Fox originally ordered the "Riverdale" TV series in fall 2014.
Other pilots in consideration by The CW include "Frequency," a reimagining of the2000 movie; "Transylvania," which follows a young woman and a disgraced Scotland Yard detective as they witness the births of history's most famous monsters and villains; and an untitled paranormal project from producer Kevin Williamson.
