USA Network has cast Ryan Phillippe ("Secrets & Lies") in the Mark Wahlberg-produced new series "Shooter," based on the 2007 movie by the same name. The series had a pilot commitment, and now with Phillippe's casting, it has received a pilot green light, Deadline Hollywood reported.
John Hlavin ("Underworld: Awakening") wrote the pilot script, which focuses on Bob Lee Swagger (Phillippe), a former marine sniper who has been out of the game for some time before reluctantly being brought back into the fold to protect the President. Unfortunately, he is betrayed and framed for the assassination attempt, forcing him on the run in order to clear his name.
Phillippe will take on the role originated by Wahlberg in the feature film. He will also serve as producer on the pilot.
"I love the character of Bob Lee Swagger and we are thrilled to have Ryan on board for the show," said Wahlberg, who is executive producing along with Hlavlin, Stephen levinson and Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Initially set up at TNT last year, Paramount TV negotiated a deal to send it over to USA, which just scored big last summer with the surprise hit "Mr. Robot."
