The Indianapolis Colts missed the playoffs this past season, and while they decided to give head coach Chuck Pagano a new contract, many changes are expected to occur this offseason. Colts owner Jim Irsay has already said that franchise quarterback Andrew Luck's contract extension will be "shocking," and with the new contract in place, there will be less money to spread around the Colts' roster.
The Colts front office has some major decisions to make this offseason, and while Andre Johnson is likely on his way out the door, a decision still needs to be made regarding the tight end position. Both Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen become unrestricted free agents this offseason, but only one is expected to remain in Indianapolis, according to Zak Keefer of The Indianapolis Star.
Fleener is the tight end expected to stay in Indianapolis, as he is the better fit with the Colts, according to Keefer. Fleener struggled to produce in the Colts' offense without Luck this past season, recording 54 receptions for 491 yards with three touchdowns. The Colts tight end was drafted directly after Luck in the second-round of the 2012 NFL Draft, and he has strong chemistry with Colts quarterback, as the two played together at Stanford.
While Fleener is expected to resign with the Colts, Allen will test the free agent market, according to Keefer. The Colts used Allen as a sixth blocker on the offensive line for the majority of the 2015 season, as they struggled to protect any quarterback that lined up behind center. The talented tight end was hardly utilized in Indianapolis' offense and saw just 29 targets this past season.
It will be intriguing to see what interest Allen garners in free agency this offseason, as the Colts tight end will likely be one of the top coveted free agent tight ends on the open market.
