There have been rumors going around for months about Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic being moved, most likely to Winnipeg, for a younger Jason Trouba. It seems that with the Islanders sitting in the position they're in, the team is not looking to trade the 25-year-old anymore.
"The sense I'm getting from teams that would like to trade for Hamonic is that New York Islander general manager Garth Snow would really rather prefer to put this whole thing off until the summer," TSN's Bob McKenzie noted.
Other sources agree with this sentiment.
Islanders writer Arthur Staple believes that Hamonic is staying with the Isles not only for the season, but for the offseason as well.
The Winnipeg Jets did not seem willing to part with their 21-year-old defenseman in a one-for-one deal either, and general manager Garth Snow was not going to offer anything else, so the deal was most likely dead in the water despite where the Islanders were in the the standings.
"The Trouba-Hamonic thing - the New York Islanders aren't doing anything that jeopardizes their chances to win this year. I think they're all in for this year. They've talked about Trouba for Hamonic. They've asked. When Winnipeg talked about Hamonic, the first thing that the Jets did was they said, 'Well, would you do it for Byfuglien?' The Islanders said, 'No, we want somebody with term.' They asked for Trouba, the Islanders did, and the Jets said, 'No,'" Elliotte Friedman said.
"I don't know if it's one-for-one. What if the Jets said, 'Well, we think Trouba is worth more than Hamonic, so we want more,'" Friedman continued, according to Today's Slapshot's Chris Nichols. "And the Islanders aren't going to do that, necessarily, in a year where they think they can win."
The New York Islanders are sitting in 3rd place in the Metropolitan Division, coming off a 5-2 win on Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings.
