Millennials are well aware of their love of wine, but a survey has proved just how much they really love indulging in a nice glass of red or white. The Wine Market Council conducted a survey and found out that people aged 21 to 38, also known as millennials, bought 159.6 million cases, which means they drank 42 percent of all the wine consumed in the U.S. in 2015, according to Wine Spectator.
This means that millennials drank more than any other generation in the country last year.
While cheap wine like Trader Joe's Two Buck Chuck or boxed Franzia might come to mind, the survey also found that millennials don't mind splurging on their beverages. "17 percent of millennials who drank wine spent over $20 per bottle, as compared to only 5 percent of baby boomer wine lovers," according to NBC News.
"Wine drinkers are beginning to sort themselves out," John Gillespie, president of the Wine Market Council, said while presenting the research, according to Mic. "It's the self-identification of, 'Yeah, I'm a wine person.'"
Among frequent wine drinkers under the age of 30, two-thirds of them were women. "Wine is winning with women," the council explained. And of this younger generation drinking wine, 50 percent of them wind up talking about it on Facebook. More than one-third of them use other platforms like YouTube, Twitter and Instagram to share their classy drinking habits with their followers.
