Florida Panthers RUMORS: Brian Campbell Extension Talks Underway?

Veteran defenseman Brian Campbell is in the last year of his contract, but both he and the Panthers seem optimistic about coming to an agreement for an extension. At 36 years old and turning 37 in May, he will most likely have to take a significant cut in term and salary. He is at the end of an eight-year contract he signed with Chicago in 2008 valued at over $57 million, according to the Miami Herald's George Richards.

Campbell was not always this enthusiastic about playing with Florida, even asking to be traded in 2013 because of Florida's uninspired play.

"You never know how many years you have left and I didn't want to be sitting there on a team like that," Campbell said.

"It wasn't a glorious time to be a Panther," he continued, according to Richards. "I just wanted to win,"

"He was ticked off. We weren't winning and things definitely didn't look too good," general manager Dale Tallon said. "I don't blame him. I didn't shop him. A deal didn't come to fruition and I'm glad it didn't."

Campbell was reportedly glad too. Thursday's Panthers game will be his 352nd game with Florida, not counting seven playoff games in 2012 and will be his 362nd consecutive game overall, including a few with his former team, the Blackhawks. He is second only to Olli Jokinen, who played 373 consecutive games with Florida, according to Richards, and 397 consecutive games overall. Campbell has not missed a game since March 20, 2011 when he was still on the Blackhawks.

"It has been a pleasure watching him play," teammate Steven Kampfer said, according to Richards. "He has this streak for a reason. He's here early, stays late."

Campbell wanted to win and it seems he'll finally get his chance as Florida is sitting on top of the Atlantic Division.

"I'm having fun playing hockey right now," an excited Campbell said, according to Richards. "We're thriving and I'm enjoying coming to the rink every day. I feel great and having fun climbing the standings with this team."

Matt Oates, Campbell's agent is expected to be in Miami next week to begin extension talks.
