Yale University is on lockdown after an anonymous caller tipped off police that his "roommate" was heading to the campus to "shoot people," NBC Connecticut reported.
The Ivy League school posted the following emergency alert on their official website:
Update message to the Yale Community, November 25 - 11:57 a.m. There are confirmed reports of a person with a gun on campus on the Old Campus. The shelter-in-place/lockdown continues. Teams from Yale Police, New Haven and the State Police are on the scene and are actively searching for any gunman. THIS IS NOT A TEST. Call 911 with any information.
There have been no reports of shots fired or any arrests as of press time. Police have shut down several streets around the campus where the alleged gunman may be. The following streets around Yale University are closed, according to NBC:
High Street between Elm and Chapel streets
Chapel Street between High and College streets
College Street between Chapel and Elm streets
Elm Street between College and High streets
"At 12:45 p.m. SWAT officers, FBI agents, and other law-enforcement personnel in fatigues and helmets, with riot shields, massed on High Street near the corner of Crown. One pulled out a dry-erase board," the New Haven Independent reported.
According to NBC, two witnesses claim they saw a man with a "long rifle" on campus. Police are urging anyone on Yale's campus to stay indoors and those who are off campus to stay away.
"There is no change in the campus status. We do not have additional information at this time. Those on campus should continue shelter in place," Yale posted on their website at 12:54 p.m.
Anyone with information is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately.
