Lindsey Vonn has officially won more Alpine World Cup crystal globes, or season victories in individual discipline, than any other man or woman. The American skier earned her eighth downhill title on Saturday.
She also holds four overall globes, five in the super-G and three in combined. Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark had held the previous record since 1984.
Despite losing her cool on Friday and posting a video of her destroying her ski binding (with a hammer) that caused her to crash in the last race, the weight of Vonn's accomplishment cannot be denied.
"I made a mistake and everyone does that," Vonn said in apology, according to the CBC. "I am human. I had a lot of emotions yesterday and I should have just done boxing with my trainer."
Though she came in second to Italy's Nadia Franchini, Vonn leads the downhill competition by 173 points. There is one other downhill race scheduled for the season, but no other skier will be able to touch Vonn's lead.
Vonn voiced her celebration over social media. "My 20th title today!! Can't believe it!!! Thanks to everyone who helped me get here!" Vonn said on Twitter.
As a competitor in a sport dominated by only a few, Franchini appeared to have nearly as much to celebrate as Vonn.
"I still don't believe I beat Vonn because she's the best woman of all time in this sport," Franchini told ESPN. "And to do it in front of my fans is extra special."
