After winning the NFC East last season, the Redskins sit at 3-7 with a long shot of making the postseason. Quarterback Robert Griffin III has struggled in his second professional year. He's been less effective on the ground, largely because of the ACL surgery he underwent in January but also because teams have a full season of film on the read-option signal caller.

"If you're talking about Robert or if you're talking about a guy like (49ers quarterback Colin) Kaepernick, everybody comes from different systems and when you go to the National Football League and you're working with a drop-back passing game and you haven't done a lot of that, it takes some repetition," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan told reporters, via ESPN. "Whoever has been in those shoes realizes that it doesn't happen overnight."

In addition to Griffin's woes (14 passing TDs, 0 rushing TDs), the team's losing record has critics suggesting Shanahan is nearing the hot seat.

"In the future it will get better," said Shanahan, "because we do have the ability to get more depth, we've got the ability to add some players on both sides of the football, and that gives you a chance to get better as a football team."

Kaepernick has also struggled in his second year as a starter. He has just 1,802 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air and just three touchdowns on the ground. Kaepernick should get help on offense with the return of receiver Michael Crabtree, who's close to returning.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh didn't rule out the possibility of Crabtree making his debut on Monday, according to ESPN.
