Mars Inc., arguably one of the most prolific and loved chocolate makers in the world, has announced a massive recall of a number of its products in 55 countries following reports that a piece of plastic was found in a Snickers bar in Germany, according to the Associated Press.
The recalled products affect a number of the chocolate maker's most iconic products, including Mars, Snickers and Milky Way bars. The chocolate bar that contained the plastic was manufactured at the company's factory in Veghel and were sold mostly in European countries, including France, Britain and Germany. Affected products have "best before" dates from June 19, 2016 to Jan. 8, 2017.
The recall was ultimately initiated after a customer from Germany reported that a piece of red plastic was found in a Snickers bar that was bought last month. The piece of plastic was ultimately determined to have come from a protective cover used in the manufacturing process, reported News Oxy.
A spokeswoman from Mars Netherlands has stated that the recall was done mostly as a precautionary measure in order to make sure that all of the company's products being sold worldwide conform to company standards.
"We cannot be sure that this plastic was only in that particular Snickers. We do not want any products on the market that may not meet our quality requirements, so we decided to take them all back," the spokeswoman said, reported Reuters.
While Mars has not disclosed the massive recall's cost, there is the possibility that the company will face major setbacks as a result, as Cadbury lost $27.83 million after it recalled over 1 million chocolate bars in 2006 due to a salmonella outbreak.
