The Denver Broncos players are probably still coming down off the high of winning the NFL's 50th Super Bowl, but Broncos GM John Elway's sights are likely set on next season, and have been for some time. Elway has a lot to do in a short amount of time to keep the Broncos rolling and word has come that he may be considering adding a talented, but flawed player like Robert Griffin III in free agency in order to shore up his uncertain signal-caller position. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Broncos are a "legitimate" landing spot for RGIII this offseason.
We'll let that sink in for a minute.
The former Washington Redskins franchise quarterback suffered a precipitous fall from grace after taking the NFL by storm in 2012. During that magical season, he completed 258 passes for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions. It seemed as if the Redskins had finally found their man.
But things unraveled - and quickly - from there. And with Kirk Cousins' ascension to starter in Washington this past season, RGIII is on the way out. His issues may give teams pause, both on the field - he struggled to dissect defenses and seemed to have lost all confidence by the end of 2014 - and off - his demeanor has been described as both petulant and entitled and he alienated many of his Washington teammates - but he's a signal-caller with talent in need of a home where he can revamp his image.
A strong lockerroom like Denver's could be the perfect place for RGIII to settle in as a back-up in the hopes of regaining a starting gig someday. Then again, it could also be the worst landing spot possible considering Brock Osweiler's inexperience. If RGIII wants to get his starting gig back and now, there's no telling how things may unfold with the Broncos.
But with quarterback Peyton Manning leading a bevy of free agents on which Elway is going to have to make some difficult decisions, the next few months will be pivotal for the direction of the franchise. Manning's expected departure in particular is cause for concern, as Osweiler played well in spot duty last season, but wasn't able to take the job outright, even from a hobbled Manning. Osweiler is also among those soon-to-be free agents and there's little in the way of depth beyond the former second-round pick.
Adding a talented guy expected to be willing to battle for a back-up gig like RGIII could be a smart play in Denver, but Elway will need to think long and hard about the dressing room and Osweiler's confidence when considering such a move.
