Miffed by the recent Gartner data on PC sales that ranks Lenovo No. 1, Silicon Valley icon Hewlett-Packard termed the report incomprehensive, and heralded a similar report from IDC report that ranked HP at the top vendor.
The US-based computer manufacture released a statement after market data from both the research firms were published, which said, "While there are a variety of PC share reports in the market, some don't measure the market in its entirety. The IDC analysis includes the very important workstation segment and therefore is more comprehensive. In that IDC report, HP occupies the No. 1 position in PCs."
The Gartner data revealed that PC market worldwide saw a steep slide in the third quarter of 2012 and Lenovo, for the first time in the company's history, rose to the No. 1 position knocking off HP in worldwide PC shipments.
While the Chinese manufacturer Lenovo increased its global PC share to 15.7, HP's share fell short at 15.5.
"In addition to acquiring other vendors, Lenovo has also taken an aggressive position on pricing, especially in the professional market," the Gartner report said. "As a result, Lenovo has achieved significant market share gains over the last two years, exceeding regional average growth rates across all regions."
An International Data Corporation (IDC) report on PC market share placed HP at the top with a market share of 15.9 percent with Lenovo second with 15.7 percent for the third quarter of 2012.
"HP saw shipments contract more than 16 percent from a year ago and narrowly held on to the top vendor spot," the IDC report said. "Distractions caused by its reorganization, challenges in integrating its enterprise acquisitions, and an unclear strategy to regain its course remain key obstacles."
