In a rather sudden turn of events, Jack Griffin, the CEO of Tribune Publishing for the past two years, has been ousted, effective immediately. Replacing him is the former chief of Merge, Justin Dearborn, who built his career as a health-care technology executive, according to CNN Money.
Tribune Publishing is quite different from Dearborn's previous venture. He most recently worked at Merge, a company he successfully helmed until its acquisition by IBM in October 2015. Nevertheless, Dearborn stated that he believes he can push Tribune Publishing a little bit further.
"I believe Tribune Publishing has a significant opportunity to leverage technology to increase the value of its content and distribution channels. Although this is a different medium than my last technology company, it has the same challenge on how to create the highest value for our content," he said, reports The Business Wire.
Though Griffin's departure from the company is quite sudden, his contributions were nonetheless honored by the board and his successor. As for Griffin, however, he stated that the timing is right for the Tribune to go under a new leadership.
"I'm proud of all that we have accomplished to reorient the Company and position these premium brands for the future. With the progress and foundation that has been laid, the timing is right for a new leader to come on board and lead Tribune Publishing through its next phase of transformation," he said, reports The Street.
Griffin, unlike Dearborn, was a man who built his career in the media. Prior to his tenure in Tribune Publishing, he worked for Time Inc., before he was eventually terminated.
