Lin-Manuel Miranda is considering a jolly holiday in Disney's "Mary Poppins" sequel. The "Hamilton" creator and star is in talks to star opposite Emily Blunt, who will play the title role, according to Variety.
Miranda would play Jack, a lamplighter resembling the character of Bert, portrayed by Dick Van Dyke in the original 1964 classic film. Van Dyke also played the owner of the bank and Mr. Bank's (David Tomlinson) boss.
Disney may also enlist his songwriting expertise to develop new songs for the sequel. The Broadway star wrote the book and lyrics for "Hamilton: An American Musical," and already assisted Disney with original music for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and the upcoming animated movie "Moana."
The next "Mary Poppins" film will take place in Depression-era London about 20 years after the events of the first movie. It will adapt storylines from P.L. Travers' books that chronicled the continuing adventures of Mary Poppins and the Banks family.
The original "Mary Poppins" starred Julie Andrews as the "practically perfect in every way" nanny, who worked for an unhappy British banker's family in pre-World War I. Andrews nabbed an Oscar for her performance, one of five for the film, and the movie grossed more than $100 million.
"Into the Woods" director Rob Marshall will helm the "Mary Poppins" sequel, produced by John DeLuca and Marc Platt. Disney has not announced a premiere date.
