Ed Belfour Auctions Off Prized Hockey Items To Fund Business

Ed Belfour, the legendary NHL goalie, is hoping to score a victory in the whiskey and bourbon markets. Belfour has auctioned off just under $180,000 worth off prized hockey memorabilia as he accumulates funds to partner with his son on a distillery ownership based in Texas.

Belfour, a Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, is from Carmen, Manitoba in Canada, but he splits his time living in between Canada and Texas. Texas will serve as his new venture's hub of operations.

Some of the prestigious items Belfour auctioned off include a mask he wore with Chicago from 1992 until 1994; the mask he wore in Dallas when he won the Stanley Cup with the Stars in 1999; and perhaps most surprisingly, the Olympic gold medal he won with the Canadian men's hockey team at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, The Hamilton Spectator reports.

Belfour is selling only a part of his extensive memorabilia collection, and Yahoo Sports! reports that Belfour said the items he decided to auction off "were not on display anywhere" and "were just collecting dust in an attic."

Belfour's career is loaded with highlights he'll hope to replicate in his post-hockey career as an entrepreneur. Some of his hockey honors include winning the NHL Vezina Trophy as best goalie in the league twice and winning the Calder Trophy for best rookie in his 1991 debut year. Belfour retired in 2008 after playing one year in Sweden, CBC Sports reports.
