Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his first-ever Oscar award for his role in "The Revenant" at this year's Oscars ceremony on Sunday evening. The actor took home Best Actor for his portrayal of Hugh Glass in the 2015 drama film and also took the opportunity to discuss climate change as he was delivering his acceptance speech.
"Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It's the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together," DiCaprio said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this."
DiCaprio earned a standing ovation from the audience. He went on to thank his co-star Tom Hardy, director Alejandro González Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.
The actor bested fellow nominees Bryan Cranston for "Trumbo," Matt Damon for "The Martian," Michael Fassbender for "Steve Jobs" and Eddie Redmayne for "The Danish Girl," according to Entertainment Weekly.
DiCaprio was previously nominated for Best Actor in the prestigious ceremony for the films "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "The Aviator," "Blood Diamond" and "The Wolf of Wolf Street." His nomination for "The Revenant" was his fifth, according to USA Today.
