World of Warcraft Movie Release Pushed To March To Avoid Coming Out Against Star Wars: Episode VII

Legendary Games' big screen version of its popular game franchise, Warcraft, has changed the release date of the film in order to avoid going directly up against another titan of nerd culture. Star Wars Episode VII was originally set to release around the same time and Warcraft does not want to go up against it.

Universal announced today that the 3D film, Directed by Duncan Jones, which was originally slated to open opposite Episode VII on December 18 2015 has been rescheduled for a March 11, 2016 release according to reports from IGN.

The film will be based on Blizzard Entertainment's bestselling game series, originally a real time strategy title turned MMORPG with the launch of World of Warcraft. It will be written by Charles Leavitt and then rewritten by Duncan Jones. At this year's BlizzCon we learned that the film will work as an origin story for the uninitiated in the Warcraft universe and will discuss the first contact between Orcs and human beings. That isn't to say that the movie will borrow nothing form the game. Notable characters Lothar and Durotan from Warcraft 2 will find their way into the film.

Meanwhile, Star Wars will still be releasing in December of 2015 and will restart the trilogy and show the universe after the end of the rebel uprising for the first time since The Return of the Jedi. J.J. Abrams will direct the epic new three part saga.

In the meantime, the game "World of Warcraft" recently announced a new expansion to the game that will be titled "Warlords of Draenor" that will expand the game's universe and add more depth to the story that has been ongoing in-game ever since Warcraft's release in 2006.
