Jets Sign Safety Dawan Landry to Fill Hole Left by Brother LaRon

The New York Jets signed safety Dawan Landry Tuesday, according to ESPNNewYork.com.

The signing could possibly fill the glaring need the Jets have at the safety position after Dawan’s brother, LaRon, left to join the Indianapolis Colts in March. The Colts gave LaRon, the younger Landry, a contract that offers $24 million over four years with $14 million in guaranteed money.

Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson was more than happy to swipe the 28-year-old safety from the Jets.

"We're ecstatic about this signing," he said through a statement in March. "We feel LaRon is an absolute game changer and a true impact player. We're talking about a 220-pound safety that runs 4.3 and plays to that speed. His approach to the game and his style of play are lights out and embody the culture we're building on the defense and this team in general."

The Jets are hoping Dawan, 30, will be able to bring the same fire his brother brought when he was with the team. The signing puts him back on the same team as head coach Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman. Landry previously coached by the two coaches for three seasons with Baltimore Ravens from 2006 to 2008.

While he stayed with the Ravens for two more seasons, Ryan left for a head coaching job with the Jets. Thurman left the Ravens in 2007.

Laron shouted out his big brother on Twitter Tuesday after learning about the signing.

"My big bro just sent me a text sayin 'Jet life to da next life'.. congrats big bro," he tweeted.

While Landry isn’t expected to pile up interceptions, he's known as a solid, veteran safety. He has only picked off 12 passes in seven seasons, but he is expected to easily pick up the familiar Ryan system.
