Oklahoma State sophomore Marcus Smart is quietly pushing his name into the draft conversation with the likes of Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker. Smart is averaging 22.5 points per game after a 30-point outing on Thursday against Purdue.
Smart's efforts, along with senior swingman Markel Brown's 19.3 points per game, have the No. 5 Cowboys sitting with a 6-0 record. Brown added 25 points to help stifle Purdue's near-comeback in Oklahoma State's 97-87 win.
"I'm glad that we won," Cowboys coach Travis Ford said, via ESPN. "We're happy with the win and we'll move on. It wasn't the prettiest thing. It's not the way you actually draw it up. It's a great learning lesson for us. Teams are going to make runs."
Butler is also perfect on the season with a 5-0 record. Sophomore guard Kellen Dunham leads the team with 19.0 points per game, and junior forward Kameron Woods has a team-high 9.2 rebounds per game. Butler also has a monster in the paint with Khyle Marshall, who's averaging 18.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
First-year Butler coach Brandon Miller and his team earned a spot in the Old Spice Classic semifinals with their 76-69 win on Thursday over Washington State.
"As it got close down the stretch, we had Kellen and Khyle make play after play on the offense end of the floor," said Miller. "When we're in tough situations, in tight knit situations, close game, these guys, they seem to come together and find ways to win games. As the game got tighter, these guys got better."
