Scandal Season 3: Olivia and Fitz Are Hurting Show; Review After First 8 Episodes

Scandal has continued to top itself since its pilot episode. Shonda Rhimes has hit us with reveal after reveal, after reveal after reveal-each more surprising than the next. However, there is one story line that is holding this show back-Olivia/Fitz.

Olivia and Fitz romance is one of the central storylines of the show. It adds drama and affects other parts of the show.

Before I continue I must mention I am a Jalivia fan, in the spirit of transparency.

While I've never been a fan of Olivia/Fitz, it was at least bearable and understandable as it pertained to the plot. However, the last few episodes have be extremely confusing.

One lowlight in the Olivia/Fitz relationship came after Olivia decided to be done with Fitz (for the umpteenth time) and she threw away the secret phone. She wasn't able to hold on for much longer as she crawled on the floor to get the phone just so she could hear the president's voice.

The second lowlight came during the last episode. We were still coming off the "Fitz killed Olivia's mom shock" and many fans are thinking that maybe, just maybe, this would at least put a huge damper in Olivia/Fitz. However, Olivia was able to hold out for all of an episode and a half. The POTUS took her to a cabin in Vermont and the rest is history.

My issue with this relationship goes beyond my choice of 'ship. Usually if you watch a character with someone that you'd rather see with someone else you get a feeling of disappointment or and even slight annoyance. However, watching Olivia have sex with Fitz while she still believed he was responsible for her mother's death was extremely annoying and tiresome. Personally, I don't think my girlfriend could cause my mother's death (or in Liv's case supposed death) and I say, "Eh, you know what, let's have sex."

As I mentioned before, I understand the importance of the Olivia/Fitz relationship, but if we can throw in a bit more realism there, it would be much appreciated.

"Scandal" airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
