Retired gold-winning Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner (née Bruce) announced her support for 2016 president candidate Ted Cruz - but admitted she doesn't agree with the Republican Texas senator's stance on transgender issues. Jenner said she would like to become Cruz's "trans ambassador" if he were to win the United States presidency.
Jenner first revealed that she is a Republican on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" last fall, which was a source of tension with openly gay host. Jenner even admitted that she opposed same-sex marriage.
Now, in an interview with the Advocate promoting the upcoming second season of her E! docuseries "I Am Cait" (which chronicles her transition from Bruce), Jenner opened up about her controversial conservative views as a transgender woman and even revealed which candidate she supported for the 2016 presidential elections.
"I like Ted Cruz," the 66-year-old said. "I think he's very conservative, and a great constitutionalist, and a very articulate man. I haven't endorsed him or anything like that. But I also think, he's an evangelical Christian, and probably one of the worst ones when it comes to trans issues."
She went on to explain that the reason she still holds onto her Republican views is because she believes the GOP can provide a "vibrant economy" and jobs for the United States through capitalism and free enterprise. She also denounced presidential candidate Donald Trump for refusing to disavow KKK grand wizard David Duke. Additionally, she revealed that she met the Texas senator before her transition more than a year ago and said, "he was very nice."
"Wouldn't it be great, let's say he goes on to be president," she said. "And I have all my girls on a trans issues board to advise him on making decisions when it comes to trans issues. Isn't that a good idea? Yes, trans ambassador to the president of the United States, so we can say, 'Ted, love what you're doing, but here's what's going on.'"
During an interview on conservative radio show "Louder with Crowder" last fall, Cruz opposed President Barack Obama's push to allow school-aged transgender children the right to use bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identities.
"I'm the father of two daughters," Cruz said, "and the idea that the federal government is coming in saying that boys, with all the god-given equipment of boys, can be in the shower room with junior high girls - this is lunacy!"
