Flashback Friday Foods: 5 DIY '90s Junk Food Classics

For the generation that grew up with the Internet, nostalgia is huge. There are thousands of pages talking about the best '90s TV shows, movies, hairstyles, fashion choices and most important of all, snack foods.

Tragically, so many of our childhood favorites have been discontinued or just don't taste like they used to. Also, as adults, it's getting harder to justify spending money on super-junky food just for nostalgia's sake. However, you can quiet that nay-saying voice in your head by gathering some friends and making the foods of your childhood at home!

We've got recipes for some of our favorite '90s junk food classics for you. They're more work than buying them, for sure, but they'll taste just as good as they used to.

1. Lunchables.

These super-simple boxes were always the best thing to find in your lunchbox, and making them at home couldn't be easier. Bake some crescent roll dough into crackers, measure out pizza sauce, pepperoni, and shredded cheese, and get some ziploc containers with dividers to get the full lunchables effect.

2. Fruit by the Foot.

These delicious fruit-leather roll-ups aren't quite as sugary and stretchy as the real thing, but they're miles healthier and they still have the best part: they're rolled up and peelable.

3. Pizza Pockets.

Pizza pockets are, in our opinion, the best thing that Pillsbury makes. They're wonderful pillows full of pizza, and when you make them at home, you can customize them as much as you want. You can make lots of them at once in an assembly line and then freeze them. Pop them in the oven and they'll be ready in no time!

4. Dunkaroos.

Dunkaroos contain animal cookies and magical, delicious frosting, but you can make a copycat Dunkaroo dip with only three ingredients, and it tastes incredibly like the real thing. It's even better homemade because you won't have to ration your frosting because it's not portioned out individually.

5. Cookie Crisp Cereal.

This is the ultimate in decadence. Legend has it that it was discontinued because the cereal company couldn't keep pretending that a bowlful of mini cookies was a healthy breakfast. This won't stop you, though! Make a batch of tiny cookies and throw them in a bowl with some milk. You're an adult and there's no one to stop you! Live your dreams.
