Smarpthone making companies haven't gone past water resistance yet for their high-end or mid-range smarphones but keeping sports enthusiasts and hikers in mind, Quechua, in alliance with electronics company Archos, has unveiled a "rugged" smartphone. Quechua, a French brand known for selling mountain sports gear and equipments, used Archos' expertise in smartphone making to build a phone that can handle extreme conditions.
The new smartphone hasn't got an official name yet, but the so-called "Quechua's rugged 5-inch Android-powered smartphone" sports admirable features combined with durability. The smartphone, which has received the IP 54 certification, is powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm quad-core processor and has 1GB RAM. The phone packs a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and 4GB internal storage that can be expanded via microSD cards.
While the phone is designed to survive extreme conditions such as shock, mud, water, sand, cold and snow, it also packs a powerful 3,500 mAh battery. Once again, a feature that is useful for hikers who crave long hours of battery life. According to the company's press release, the Quechua Phone can last more than 22 hours of calling time.
Quechua's newest smartphone comes pre-loaded with apps, such as hiking maps, national parks, ski resorts, mountain guides, plants and much more, all very handy for hikers.
The smartphone is expected to sell for around €230 (about $313), but the availability of the device is yet to be announced.
