Facebook will be letting its users “unfollow” friends in their News Feed.
According to a Mashable report, the social networking giant will start allowing its users to “unfollow” a friend in their Facebook account if they don’t feel good about their friend’s posts or think that the posts are insignificant. Once unfollowed, the user will no longer see the name of their friend in the News Feed. However, that doesn’t equal to the “unfriend” feature.
A spokesperson for Facebook explained the new function in a press release, “The goal of this change is to help people curate their News Feed and see more of the content that they care about.”
However, some users are indecisive of using this new feature because the other party might feel offended after learning they were “unfollowed.” Fortunately, the other party won’t be notified after being “unfollowed,” therefore, it is a discreet way to remove your friend’s posts from your News Feed without hurting their feelings.
Does the function sound familiar? It is because, in reality, Facebook just rephrased the option “Hide all.”
Users can discreeetly perform it by clicking on the small dropdown arrow on the upper right corner of the post they want to hide in the News Feed.
Facebook already permits users to follow other people, like TV personalities and public figures, even without them being friends.
The reports say that the new feature will be available to desktop users in the next few weeks and on Android and iOS in the next months.
The new wording may just be a move to simply tell the users what to do. Additionally, it could also be a move for Facebook to even out the wordings across all platforms as other social networking sites like Twitter and Pinterest use words like “follow” and “unfollow,” too.
