Lana Rae Meisner, the wife of former Eagles member Randy Meisner, was shot and killed in the couple's Los Angeles home Sunday. The fatal injury was happened after the firearm accidentally discharged.
Police officers initially responded to a call from a woman, presumed to be Meisner, Sunday around 5:30 p.m., asking for assistance for a possibly intoxicated male suspect on the 3700 block of Eureka Drive in Studio City, Calif. The officers took a domestic violence incident report and left. Later that night, officers responded to a radio call that said shots had been fired at the same address. When they arrived, officers found her suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Meisner, 63, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles Fire Department. It was later determined by the Valley Bureau detective personnel and Los Angeles Coroner's Office that her death was an accident. When the rifle went off, she was moving the firearm out of storage in a closet. As she went to lift the case that held the gun, another item in the case moved and hit the trigger of the gun, causing it to fire and kill her.
"There was an accidental discharge of the firearm. It was completely accidental, there is nothing indicative of a murder, homicide or a suicide," LAPD Detective Gus Barrientos said. "It's a weird accident, that's all I can say. There was absolutely no struggle, just a freak accident."
Randy, 69, was one of the founding members of the Eagles. He played bass in the band from 1971-1977 and also sang lead vocals on the song "Take It to the Limit."
The rocker and his late wife faced some tough times within the past year when Randy was out under court-ordered supervision after he threatened murder-suicide with an AK-47 during a visit to a hospital. He did not actually have the weapon on his person during this time. He was put on mandated court supervision after the incident.
According to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department, Randy was cooperative throughout the entire investigation and has been cleared of any wrong doing. The couple married in November 1996.
