BBC Asks Peter Capaldi To Stay On As Doctor Who After Steven Moffat’s Exit

"Doctor Who" will lose its long-running showrunner Steven Moffat following the upcoming season, but the BBC is asking Peter Capaldi to continue in his role as the Twelfth Doctor. Capaldi, who joined the British drama in 2013, is still thinking it over.

The "Doctor Who" star revealed BBC had approached him to stay with the show even after Moffett leaves later this year. He has some time before he needs to make such a decision.

"I've been asked to stay on," Capaldi told RadioTimes.com, "But it's such a long time before I have to make a decision."

The official Twitter account for "Doctor Who" announced Moffat's exit earlier this year. He joined the show in 2005 and became the showrunner in 2010 for season five, replacing Russell T. Davies. He was responsible for introducing the 11th and 12th Doctors played by Matt Smith and Capaldi.

Chris Chibnall, creator of "Broadchurch," will succeed Moffat, who will oversee the tenth season set to air in spring 2017 as well as the annual Christmas episode in 2016.

"Feels odd to be talking about leaving when I'm just starting work on the scripts for season 10, but the fact is my timey-wimey is running out," Moffatt said at the time of the announcement. "While Chris is doing his last run of Broadchurch, I'll be finishing up on the best job in the universe and keeping the TARDIS warm for him. It took a lot of gin and tonic to talk him into this, but I am beyond delighted that one of the true stars of British Television drama will be taking the Time Lord even further into the future."

Capaldi also spoke about his admiration for Moffat and Chibnall, and the tough decision he faces leaving the show.

"Steven's been absolutely wonderful, so I love working with him. Chris is fantastic, and I think he's a hugely talent guy," Capaldi said. "I don't know where the show's gonna go then. I don't know. I have to make up my mind and I haven't end."

He ended saying, "As Steven will tell you, it's very difficult to say goodbye."

BBC America will air the "Doctor Who" Christmas episode on Dec. 25 in the U.S.
