Pope Francis Disguises Himself in Priest's Robes, Leaves Vatican City at Night to Visit Homeless?

Has the Pope been trading his robes for plainclothes, leaving the Vatican City to visit homeless people at night?

That's what Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, the Vatican Almoner, hinted toward in a recent interview.

According to the Huffington Post, "a knowledgeable source in Rome" said that the Pope has been going along with Krajewski during his nighttime trips to distribute aid to the poor.

"Swiss guards confirmed that the Pope has ventured out at night, dressed as a regular priest, to meet with homeless men and women," the source, whose identity was not revealed, told the Post.

In an earlier interview, Krajewski said: "When I say to him, 'I'm going out into the city this evening,' there's the constant risk that he will come with me," he stated, smiling mischievously while he avoided reporters pressing him for more information. He didn't answer when asked whether the Pope had gone with him to the city.

Pope Francis has gained the nickname, "the people's Pope," since he began his papacy earlier this year - he has personally phoned ailing followers who have reached out to him, condemned the dregs of capitalism and tightened up on corruption within the church.

This isn't the first time the Pope has ventured out of the Vatican City at night - some have claimed Pope John XIII slinked from the walls of his home to visit the public in Rome.

Reports have also spoken of Pope Pius XII disguising himself as a Franciscan during World War II to assist Jews living in Rome with their efforts to escape the Nazis.
