Everyone who works with computers on an everyday basis knows that there is no such thing as hardware that is too fast. Indeed, in the world of hard drives, especially among solid state drives (SSDs), speed is king, and it always will be.
Hot on the heels of Samsung's announcement last week about its new SSD, Seagate has also unveiled its most powerful SSD ever. Contrary to Samsung's latest drive, which focused more on storage than speed, Seagate's new flagship drive focuses on speed.
The company even said Tuesday that its new enterprise-class PCIs drive will be the world's fastest SSD ever.
What's particularly clever about Seagate's new drive is that it harnesses the power of both 16-lane PCIe and NVMe technology. Doing so allows it to be capable of performing in a class far above any other enterprise-class SSD on the market. While the company has not elaborated on the specifics of the drive's performance, Seagate did announce that the drive would be capable of a blazing 10 gigabytes of data per second, almost 4GB/s faster than the current world's fastest SSD.
However, speed is not all that the new SSD offers, as Seagate also announced that the drive is designed to fully meet the specifications required by the Open Compute Project. By doing so, enterprises who would utilize Seagate's new SSD for their day-to-day operations would be able to enjoy pretty good compatibility across data centers and other pertinent enterprise applications.
Of course, an SSD of this caliber is not really designed for the conventional user (unless one is an avid gamer with a modern motherboard that supports NVMe SSDs, of course). The company noted that the drive is designed to breeze through intense tasks, such as "web applications, weather modeling, or statistical trends analysis."
Due to the drive's target market, Seagate's newest flagship drive would most probably quite heavy on the budget. While the company did not mention any price point for the new SSD, it is expected that the drive would set back customers well into the thousands of dollars.
Seagate has announced that the ridiculously-fast SSD is ready for production and that customers could expect it to be available this summer.
