Political Pundit Ann Coulter and Meghan McCain, daughter of Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, are in a war of words after Coulter joked about killing McCain on Wednesday.
The battle started when Coulter posted a column about MSNBC talk show host Martin Bashir's comments on the Republican view of gun control.
"MSNBC's Martin Bashir suggested that Republican senators need to have a member of their families killed for them to support the Democrats' gun proposals, 'Let's start with Meghan McCain!'" she wrote.
The comments inspired a retort from McCain on her Twitter account.
"Apparently Ann Coulter made a joke about me being killed in a recent column. I should expect nothing less but disgusted regardless," she tweeted Thursday "My father is a very famous politician. My family gets a lot of threats. Joking about me being killed really isn't funny or appropriate," she said in a following tweet.
Coulter would later go on Fox News' "Hannity", with talk show host Sean Hannity, to talk about her comments, according to the Huffington Post.
"I was making a joke," she said. "For one thing ... that heinous thing Martin Bashir said, nobody knew about that until I added a joke, which is known as hyperbole."
"You were making a joke," Hannity said.
"I think the exclamation point made it clear," Coulter said. "And the fact that everyone laughed when they read it."
After tweeting on the subject Thursday night, McCain continued with a barrage of tweets Friday morning.
"Yes, I just saw Ann Coulters response on Sean Hannity. It's just beyond comprehension. Glad my hypothetical murder 'made everyone laugh,'" she began Thursday night.
"This is the last time I am commenting on this subject, but the reason why young people are so disillusioned with politics is because if you dare state your opinion or call for civility - there are people in this world that laugh at the idea of you being murdered," she said Friday morning.
If you think I'm going to back down, you don't know me at all. Extreme commentators are a very sad, pathetic, act of the past," she continued. "I still believe that the political discourse in this country doesn't have to be like this. I for one will never be a part of the hate speech.
Meghan's mother, Cindy McCain, joined in to defend her daughter. "Ann Coulter have one of your family members threatened. See how you feel," she tweeted Thursday.
Fox News took down Coulter's column Friday afternoon.
