In an entirely new phase-out, USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced that a next-generation USB connector is on the way. The new USB Type-C connector uses the technology from its older models, USB 3.1 and 2.0, but it will feature a sleeker and thinner design and enhance performance. The plug orientation or the cable direction with the new USB Type-C will be the least of the worries.
"While USB technology is well established as the favored choice for connecting and powering devices, we recognize the need to develop a new connector to meet evolving design trends in terms of size and usability," Brad Saunders, chairman of the industry standards group, said in a statement. "The new Type-C connector will fit well with the market's direction and affords an opportunity to lay a foundation for future versions of USB."
While the new gadget sounds promising, on the downside its new design will be a problem for all the gadgets that use the current design of USB. Interested users will need compatible adaptors until a fresh lineup of gadgets are launched.
The new lineup of USB connectors will not be ready until mid 2014.
