Newcastle United Fires Boss Steve McClaren, Appoints Ex-Madrid Manager Rafael Benitez In His Place

Newcastle United has fired head coach Steve McClaren and has replaced him with ex-Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez.

The club's recent form in the league has left it languishing in second last place in the Barclay's Premier League, and with just 10 games left to play, relegation to the lower league - The English Championship- is a very realistic possibility.

Benitez, who has been out of work since he was fired back in January by Real Madrid, is now tasked with the mission of saving Newcastle United's season. Benitez spoke of his enthusiasm on Friday. "I have the pleasure to confirm I have committed to a legendary English club, with the massive challenge of remaining part of the Premier League," he said.

Newcastle has lost five of their last six matches, so motivation for the players is now a must if they want to remain in the Premier League next season. "It will be a challenge not just for me and my staff but for the players, the club and the fans." Benitez exclaimed in a rallying cry to the fans. "All of us must push together in the same direction and with the same target in mind. This is the reason why I'm going to ask for your total support to successfully complete this task."

The Premier League will be a familiar stomping ground for Benitez, as he previously spent six years as a Liverpool manager from 2004 until 2010. In 2005, Benitez won the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool and became a loved club icon. In fact, he was so fond of England during his spell that his wife and daughter still maintain residences there. The familiarity obviously comforts the 55-year-old. "Personally, it means my return to the Premier League, closer to my home and my family. I can't be happier," Benitez said.

Newcastle has signed Benitez on a three-year contract, but there is reportedly a break clause attached in the deal if Newcastle United is indeed relegated. It will be a tough debut for Benitez on Sunday, as Newcastle will be facing England's fairy tale league leaders Leicester City away from home.
