Warning: the following contains potential spoilers for "The Walking Dead" TV series and "The Walking Dead" comic book.
Although you can say that every season of AMC's "The Walking Dead" ratchets up the action and drama during its home stretch, season six has really taken that approach to the next level. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of iconic comic book baddie Negan and the Saviors, and last week we saw Rick's group lay waste to one of their compounds in one of the best actions scenes in "Walking Dead" history. While the mission went well overall, Maggie and Carol are did get captured in the process. With this threat hanging over their heads and Negan inching ever closer to his introduction, we can tell the final run of episodes are going to be crazy.
That notion was practically confirmed by actress Melissa McBride, who plays the dangerous and interesting Carol, when she talked about the seemingly gruesome season finale.
"It was so very dark," McBride revealed. "I couldn't say anything after I had finished reading it. I felt like I had dropped into a black hole."
McBride isn't the first cast member to share these types of thoughts regarding the finale. Star Andrew Lincoln also said it's an absolute nightmare. If both of them are building the season ender up to be so dramatic, we can hardly guess at what's in store.
Throughout its six season run, "The Walking Dead" has provided audiences with some of the most disturbing horror-core on television. We've seen cannibals, child murder, decapitations, and gut-wrenching character deaths. Given all that has come before it, it's pretty amazing to hear that the finale somehow manages to still shock and disturb (in a good way).
Warning: Massive Spoilers Ahead
The only thing we can think of that matches up to McBride's description is a particularly hard-to-swallow scene from the source material. In the comics, Negan uses a barbed wire wrapped bat, which he lovingly nicknamed Lucille, to dole out justice to those who cross him. Tragically, Negan uses that bat to beat Glenn to death in one of the most brutal scenes in comic history. We're hoping against all odds that showrunner Scott Gimple decides to take a creative liberty with the source material and let Glenn live after all of his close calls, but we're not sure that fans will be that lucky.
"The Walking Dead" airs on AMC Sundays at 9 pm ET.
