John Oliver returned to "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Monday night to discuss something he used to not "give a damn about" - Donald Trump. The last time the host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" was on "The Late Show" in the fall, the British comedian said he never thought he would have to care about Trump's campaign. When Oliver and his staff on "Last Week Tonight" finally realized Trump's presidential campaign was not going to fizzle out like many had previously thought, the show dedicated a full 20 minutes to dismantling the GOP candidate and made a new slogan for Trump: "Make Donald Drumpf Again."
After Oliver's new slogan took off, "Last Week Tonight" decided to make knockoff hats of Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again" with their revised one. There have already been 35,000 "Make Donald Drumpf Again" hats sold and even a famous rapper wanted one - Jay Z.
"Apparently Jay Z's people called HBO asking for a hat," Oliver said. "I'll say this for a start: buy the hat, Jay Z. Jay Z wanted one for free. He's done very well - spring for a hat. Let it trickle down. That's how economics works, right?"
Oliver said that when the rapper called, the "Make Donald Drumpf Again" hats were almost all sold out, and warned HBO that they may need to order more hats if they give one to Jay Z.
"I did say to be careful, because if he puts that hat on in public, we're going to need more hats," Oliver said. "And if his wife [Beyoncé] puts that hat on in public, we are no longer a TV show. We're a hat-manufacturing company."
Colbert closed out the segment with his former "The Daily Show" cast member by asking Oliver if a candidate like Trump would ever succeed in his home nation of England, or if the parliamentary system natural weeds them out.
"It's not that it could happen, it has happened," Oliver replied. "We had many kings in the past. Look through British history, and you'll see lots of Drumpfs wearing gold on their head. There's an equivalent love for gold between 18th century kings and current presidential candidates."
