Since LeBron James became more active on Twitter, the media has been speculating what some of these vague tweets could actually mean. James has already been forced to downplay some of what has been said on social media, but the news cycle around the activity continues. Now, after Kyrie Irving posted his own cryptic tweet, the point guard is having to dismiss tension between him and James.
Irving is now seeing his tweets start to be taken out of context, as many wonder if they are subtle shots towards teammates. Irving tweeted, "Control what you can control" around the same time that James was on his little spree. During that time, the Cavaliers had lost three of their last four games while also failing to sign Joe Johnson. Plenty of rumors were swirling about locker room drama, especially with James and Irving. The point guard is dismissing any idea of that.
"I don't really check Twitter for people's comments or what they're saying or anything like that," Irving said. "I didn't think it was directed toward me at all. I know everybody made a big deal about it and then I tweet and then all of the sudden it's a subtle beef between me and Bron. No, I don't think Bron tweets for me and I don't think I tweet for LeBron."
Regardless of what James or Irving says to the media, the speculation will be there, regardless. Several reports have come out regarding a disconnect between the two stars. Both James and Irving are trying to lead the Cavaliers back to the NBA Finals for a chance at a rematch with the Golden State Warriors. Questions about their on-court chemistry and off-the-court relationship continue to come into play.
"Irving remains a dynamic scorer, but the disconnect between Irving and James is real," Chris Mannix said. "On-court chemistry between the two, said one scout who saw Cleveland play recently, 'basically nonexistent.' Team sources insist the relationship is solid, that James is simply teaching, trying to raise Irving's basketball IQ."
Regardless of whether or not the reports around James and Irving are true, the two are the most important pieces to the Cavaliers' playoff run and they must figure things out. The Cavaliers have looked better in recent games after the addition of Channing Frye and his outside shot. Kevin Love is working to get more involved as well. The x-factor could be leadership on the court. James is doing his best to be vocal and now Irving is planning on stepping up to do the same. The question is whether they can both lead together.
"I think that in order for our team to be where we want to go, I have to step up and be that other leader on our team other than LeBron. So, I would agree with that. It's definitely in my personality," Irving said.
