The Washington Redskins have re-signed their veteran defensive end Junior Galette to a one-year deal worth around $4.1 million. Galette sat out last season because of a torn Achilles tendon which didn't help Washington see the full extent of his abilities or find out if he would be a fit in their system.
Galette was signed by Washington four days after he was released by the New Orleans Saints last summer. He was arrested after being implicated in an alleged domestic violence incident and was suspended two games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.
The charges he faced were dropped, and he was able to finish out the rest of his suspension while on injured reserve. Galette was incredibly productive with the Saints, and at 27 years old he will get an opportunity to do the same for the Redskins.
One thing that is clear is Galette has general manager Scot McCloughan's trust, as most teams would think twice about releasing a troubled linebacker coming off of an Achilles tear. In 2014 with the New Orleans Saints he started in 13 games, recorded 45 tackles, 10 sacks, two safeties, two asses defended and three forced fumbles.
Galette's career statistics could be better, but the veteran only started two games prior to 2013. Throughout his career Galette has recorded 128 combined tackles, 31.5 sacks, two safeties, four pass defenses and five forced fumbles.
His breakout season really came in 2013, the first time he recorded double-digit sacks. The Redskins should rotate Galette with Kendall Reyes, Chris Baker and Stephen Paea. He will automatically be an upgrade at the defensive end position and should form a potent duo if he's able to start beside Ryan Kerrigan.
The Redskins should build up their defensive line through the draft but will have a difficult time finding a top-tier pass rusher with the 21st overall pick. They will also have needs at wide receiver considering Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson's age (29).
The Redskins will need some youthful talent to help bring a more dynamic element to the offense. Re-signing Galette will allow the Redskins to see if the 2015 season was a result of a bad division or the beginning of something special.
