Disney has reportedly reached a deal with Paramount regarding the distribution rights to the popular Harrison Ford led Indiana Jones franchise.
Now, Disney already had the rights to the films following the huge deal it made to acquire Lucasfilms earlier last year. Jones was thrown in with the likes of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker into the Mickey Mouse's already impressive lineup of iconic American characters.
As part of the new agreement, according to IGN, Paramount will still be able to distribute the first four films: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the most questionable of the franchise amongst fans, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In exchange, Disney will have the right to work on new movies in the franchise while giving a small monetary cut to Paramount. In other words, Paramount is in a position to make out like a bandit off of a potentially popular franchise installment without having to do really any work.
What this has obviously led many to believe is that a fifth installment in the adventures of the fedora wearing, whip wielding archeologist might be on the horizon. Over the summer, Harrison Ford indicated that hew as still up for reprising his role once more. In addition, other rumors from earlier this year indicate that Ford's deal to reprise his role as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII, included a stipulation that he sign on with Lucasfilm and Disney to commit to a fifth Indiana Jones movie.
Now that Disney has the rights, it would be the perfect time for it to fast-track production of a fifth Indiana Jones film. In fact, Variety reports that Disney Chairman and CEO Bobo Iger has expressed a lot of interest in making some money off of its Lucasfilms purchase.
