When former Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback and 2016 NFL Draft hopeful Dak Prescott was arrested for driving under the influence, it was viewed as about as idiotic and shocking a development as possible for a guy hoping to make the jump from college athlete to highly-paid professional athlete in a few short months. How could Prescott, an athletic young signal-caller with a boatload of upside, likely to land somewhere in the draft's middle rounds, but who isn't developed enough for anything to be considered a certainty draft-wise, make the decision to drive while drunk?
Prescott attempted to repair his draft stock as best he could of course, apologizing and indicating remorse for his "misjudgment." But no matter how you slice it, what Prescott did was, in a word, stupid.
The decision then, by fellow former Mississippi State Bulldog and possible first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Chris Jones, to speed while driving with a suspended license would probably fall somewhere on the scale between fatuous and entirely brainless.
Jones, a defensive end for the Bulldogs projected to go somewhere in the late first or early second round in late April, was reportedly arrested early Wednesday afternoon by Mississippi State University police. Jones was stopped for speeding and when he couldn't produce a valid license, he was arrested.
He posted the $922 bail and was released shortly thereafter.
Jones, 6-foot-6, 310-pounds, grew up close to MSU in Houston, Mississippi. He was considered a mediocre prospect during his high school career, but managed to excel during his senior season and landed with the Bulldogs.
During his collegiate career, Jones developed into a versatile playmaker in the mold of another former Bulldog who is currently playing like one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL, Fletcher Cox.
Like Cox, Jones has lined up all over the Bulldogs front and looks likely to do the same at the next level. Jones finished the 2015 season for Miss. State with 44 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
It remains to be seen what kind of impact the arrest will have on Jones, a guy teams were said to have few off-the-field concerns about prior.
